Proposal Abstract
For the Open Portfolio, I propose to share four book arts projects I created collaboratively with artists Yoonmi Nam and Mariko Jesse.
‘wood+paper+box’ is a collective of three artists: Katie Baldwin, Mariko Jesse and Yoonmi Nam. We met in 2004 as artists in residence on Awaji Island, Japan where we were learning the techniques of mokuhanga. Mokuhanga is the traditional technique of Japanese water-based woodblock printmaking.
We began collaborating in 2014 by printing and mailing work to each other. We have created three collaborative projects: (1) wood+paper+box; (2) AL>CA>KS; and (3) Un/fold. ‘wood+paper+box’ reflects on ideas of memory and collection. AL>CA>KS is a series of exchanges about the places we live. Un/fold is about the act of unfolding and its relationship to structure. Each project is printed in an edition of eight and housed in a clamshell box. Our current project mise-en-scéne is an exchange of prints that can be arranged like props on a stage. This is the featured work in our solo exhibition at the Beech Museum in Manhattan, KS in 2021.
