Proposal Abstract
In 2006, I found an empty portfolio partially buried in a Dundee basement. Aware that the graphic on the front of the folio was a Paolozzi—Mickey Mouse against a background printed on silver on a burgundy book cloth- I was drawn to the object and compelled to rescue and preserve it.
This empty folio sat under a table for the next ten years before it was finally identified, through referencing the publication Editions Alecto by Tessa Sidey, as having contained the twelve Screenprints of Eduardo Paolozzi’s ‘As Is When’, (1964-5), published by Alecto and printed by Kelpa Studio.
After identifying the folio it was decided to initiate a project to produce twelve new prints for the folio in response to Paolozzi, with six artists making two prints each, in an edition of ten: The Artists being—Delia Baillie, Paul Harrison, Mark Hunter, Rachel Lee, Arthur Watson & Peter Yearworth, all of whom are associated with the Printmaking Workshops at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art , Dundee University.
The prints made in response are mostly screenprints, but also include intaglio, laser-cut, and relief printed elements. They reflect the original prints in scale and format (66 x 96 cm) of ‘As Is When’, with a new Folio being created to contain these new prints. This new folio will be exhibited alongside the new works and cover sheet, detailing the project.
The 12 prints and folio would require a wall space to accommodate, approx 12-14 metres , as a single row of prints. Alternative hanging arrangements could be made with a smaller space.
