My proposed ‘potential/potentiae’ exhibition will examine how the voice performs social power. Contemporary expanded print media will be used to extract subversive capital from the voice as the trace/copy. I will isolate socially coercive phrases and sound capacities of the voice—through copy processes—to produce aesthetic objects that undermine the protocols of power.
Work will consist of a small set of photogravures, five 3D prints from sound loops, six bacteria generated prints subjected to these same sound loops (presented as an installation) and an interactive software work.
I will convert the frequency of derogatory gendered phrases into five 3D prints. These are presented on the wall with screenprinted wallpaper behind them. These same linguistic phrases will be played over petri dishes of acidophilus bacteria. The bacteria will grow over the course of the exhibition to create a sound generated print of subjective self and its relation to the gut. The use of the bacteria as a drawing mode extends investigations into the trace/copy as a research modality. This growth is then scanned and outputted onto aluminium as a sublimated print.
I will also show an interactive software piece where the audience speaks to the computer. Their voices are transposed from its current gendered frequency to its opposite gendered range. This is replayed as audio and then printed through a retail sales EFTPOS printer as a trace print of the other. The printed EFTPOS receipts from this work have been compiled into a publication on the project which will be given away during the course of the exhibition (limited edition of 50). A small set of photogravures will also be shown.
