Proposal Abstract
This exhibition comprises a limited edition box set, containing 25 C5 size (229mm x 162mm) envelopes. The envelopes house individual responses to the project title, ‘POSTED/UNPOSTED’, and focus on the innovative use of the letterpress process across the UK and Eire. Ideally this would be presented as a handling exhibition, as the letterpress process is best understood through physical engagement with the viewer/reader. Established in 2013, Codex Polaris is a book arts group that creates opportunities and exhibiting platforms for artists who work with books in the Nordic region. Alongside the exhibition programme, Codex Polaris invites guest co-organisers to work on various networking projects, and writers to contribute with textworks to raise the profile of book arts spanning local and international perspectives.
‘POSTED/UNPOSTED: British Isles’ (2019-2020) contains a new iteration of the ‘POSTED/UNPOSTED’ (2016-2017) project curated by Imi Maufe (NOR) and Lina Nordenström (SE) who worked with 25 invited artists, printmakers and visual poets from the Nordic Countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). https://www.codexpolaris.com/postedunposted-nordic-letterpress-collaboration.html
For this new British Isles version, Imi Maufe invited Angie Butler (UK) to co-curate the exhibition. Together they worked with 24 creative practitioners who use letterpress in the UK/EIRE to contribute to this publishing project. The resulting work spans fifty years of letterpress publishing expertise, illuminating the wealth of innovative letterpress printing that takes place across these countries today.
By exhibiting the work, Imi and Angie hope they will inspire other practitioners to explore the process for themselves and also provide possibilities for further exhibitions for this project, which expands geographical, process and publishing boundaries.
