Artist Biography
Born in Taiwan and raised in the American Midwest, Charlene Liu is an artist based in Oregon. Liu creates mixed media works and multiples on paper using printmaking, drawing, and papermaking processes, alongside projects in video and installation. She combines imagery drawn from cultural references and the natural landscape to explore regional topographies, material translations and hybrid subjectivities. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the New Museum (New York), and the Tacoma Art Museum (Tacoma, Washington). Liu is an art professor and coordinator of the printmaking program at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She is currently the acting Director of the School of Art + Design and Associate Dean for the College of Design. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Columbia University in New York and a Bachelor of Art from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
