Artist Biography
Judith E. de Haan is inspired by the beauty of nature in Hardanger (region in Norway) but always seeks the human presence in these surroundings.
Her specialty is woodcut and she carefully chooses the wooden printing plates she uses in her practice. Often she saws them into pieces and uses the woodgrain in her prints.
Since 2015 she has used both Mokuhanga, the Japanese process, water-based on Japanese paper and with a baren, and the Western, oil- based on European paper with a press, woodcut technique.
“Judith’s work has an aesthetic purpose but her images also contain a message. She uses life and issues in the local community to make prints that are both abstract and decorative.” (Terje Hauken, art historian)
De Haan has her artist practice in Kunstnarhuset Messen, an international artist residency in the industrial village of Ålvik.
